Ice Dams in Twin Falls?

2/1/2022 (Permalink)

Icicles hang over the rooftop of a home. Our technicians respond to water damage emergencies 24-hours a day in Twin Falls County.

Last February, many Idaho residents had issues with ice dams. SERVPRO® of Twin Falls & Jerome Counties responds to water damage emergencies involving ice dams each year and offer this information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration for understanding and preventing ice dams:

Ice dams happen when heavy snow buildup melts during the day and then refreezes overnight when the temperatures drop. These melting and refreezing cycles may allow water to creep up under the roof shingles, allowing water to enter the attic space and damage the ceilings, walls, and contents.

Ice Dam Prevention Tips

  • Clear debris from rain gutters and downspouts
  • Keep snow off of your roof using roof rakes. Keeping heavy snow off the roof prevents roof failure and discourages ice dams from forming.
  • All winter long, keep gutters and downspouts clear of snow and icicles
  • Evaluate the insulation and ventilation in your attic. The R-value should be at least R-30, but R-38 is preferable in Northern climates. Good airflow from under the eaves or soffit area along the underside of the roof and out through roof vents is essential.
